As we begin WORD OF GOD, SPEAK, I started today with the following prayer. I encourage you to do the same. It's one of the best prayers we can pray....ever.
God, I come to you with a clean slate, no agenda of my own. What do you want to say?
Then stop and listen. A couple of things...
- If the first thing you hear is silence, don't let it bother you. Don't interpret His silence as disapproval or frustration. Most often His silence is a gift to your soul. You probably need silence and rest before you need to hear something.
- Then when He does speak, have your journal ready. Write it down, and take it in!
Ever have trouble hearing God? If you do, that makes you very human! I ran across this great quote from Loren Cunningham, Founder of Youth with a Mission, in his book Daring to Live on the Edge.
"An impression in your spirit can only come from one of four sources: your own mind, the mind of others, the mind of satan or the mind of God. Use the example of James 4:7 to silence satan and take every thought captive to obey Christ (II Cor. 10:5). God has given you the authority to silence the other sources and clear the way to hear and know it is God speaking.
"I know it may be a little uncomfortable talking to the demonic and telling them to be quiet. However it's a tool God gave us. If we're too smug, too sophisticated, too proud to take advantage of something so helpful, can we expect to hear from God anyway? Here's a sample 'listening prayer'.
One more thing - don't forget the joy. Don't forget that you're sitting in the presence of the One who IS unbridled joy....and He has gifts of joy for you to unwrap!
"Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus, your son. Please speak to my heart.
"In the name of Jesus, according to Matt.28:18 and Luke 10:19-20 I take authority over the demonic and command that they be rendered deaf, dumb and blind to my prayers and removed from my presence. Also, I silence my own mind, especially the wanderings of my mind. Father, I ask that I hear your voice alone. Whatever truth you reveal to me, I will embrace. Whatever you ask me to do, I will quickly obey."
