We've been talking about calling in MAN Group. David was anointed king at a young age, then waited 20 years before he actually became king. God uses a similar pattern of calling--waiting--fulfillment with each of us. Some final thoughts to our discussion (a couple of which were brought up last week, but worth mentioning again).
Calling is not about us, but about God. Too many times we try to root our self-worth in our calling. However, God's calling is not intended to make us feel good about ourselves. He calls us because He's already doing something and He invites us to join Him. We do receive His affirmation, but purely because we are sons.
Timing is not about us, but about God. Too often we interpret the waiting period as God's disapproval. "Why am I having to wait so long? Why is the waiting period so tough or confusing? I must've done something to frustrate God." But timing is not about us. Remember Jesus' path. He was called "before the creation of the world," then had to wait 4000+ years before the fruition of that calling. I doubt it was because the Father was frustrated...just the opposite. Luke tells us that Jesus came "in the fullness of time." There is a 'fullness of time' for our calling as well, and it's on God's time table.
It's all about trust. Regardless of where we are in the pattern of calling--waiting--fulfillment, and regardless of the unanswered questions we still may have, our response to calling is the same today and every day --- trust. We trust God to speak. We trust God to lead. We trust God's timing. We trust God with our 'Ishmaels'. We trust God to lead us into and through fulfillment. We trust. If every day my goal is to trust, then every day I'll be exactly where God wants me. That's the journey!
Let me remind you of this scripture - "God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago." Ephesians 2:8-10.
You are God's masterpiece, and He made you for great purposes!
