I was preparing for AWANA one workday thinking about how to get the kids to start memorizing more scripture. As I thought on what we could do to impress on these kids the importance of truly knowing God's Word I was doing some research and I found that to get something to stick in your brain you have to do it at least six times. That is a lot in kid world! As I thought on the things I discovered, I found myself realizing the importance of the discipline of memorizing scripture, not just for the kids, but for me as well. Memorizing scripture is not one the areas that I spend a lot of time on personally. The fact that I get up and tell the kids each week that they need to do this and I am not actively doing it made me feel like I was feeding them lines each week. I was simply an actor playing my part, but did not really do what I was telling them to do. The thought that I was saying, "kids do what I say and not what I do", came to me and I wanted to change that. I realized that the reason the kids may not be memorizing scripture is because they do not see enough adults in their lives memorizing scripture. Studies show that kids mimic what we adults do. If we overeat, our kids will be likely to overeat. If we watch a lot of television, our kids will probably do the same. If we pray and seek the Lord and find Him in His Word, our kids will be likely to follow suit. Man, there it was, the answer I was looking for- not a simple task, but an incredibly important one. We, parents, leaders, family members, need to do what we believe is important for our kids to do.
After this thought came to me, my husband and I wanted our family to start hiding God's Word in our hearts. We have started to memorize one or two scripture verses a week as a family-- it has been a challenge to remember to go over the verses, but it has definitely brought our family together in our pursuit to be more like Christ. We have found our kids remember things a lot easier than we do.
Here is your challenge -- start memorizing one or two scriptures a week. Do it individually or as a family. Hiding His Word in your heart will set the example to those you influence and YOU will be able to identify yourself with Christ. He will be more and you will be less!!!
